Carl Drivold fought a fierce battle with Richard Brace Jr. for control of the lead in the IMCA Modified main event Friday night at Ernie Prussell Memorial Speedway. The finish of the event gave the win to Drivold, second to Brace and third to Cortney Dozier. This pattern was solid all through the evening’s racing. Brace jumped to an early lead in the main, after a first lap mishap put Kim Kilroy to the rear and took heat race winner Dick Appleby from the main event race altogether.
In the one heat race that the IMCA Modifieds ran, Kilroy had been dominant throughout most of the race, however when she got high in turn four on the white flag lap, Appleby, who had been dogging her, saw his chance and took it. Following Appleby in the heat race was Brace, Drivold, and Dozier, leaving Kilroy fifth at the finish.
This pattern was to repeat itself in the main event later that evening. With Appleby out and Kilroy struggling at the rear of the field, Brace, Drivold and Dozier did a nose to nose waltz during the entire race bringing the fans to their feet more than once. Brace did an admirable job of out driving Drivold and Dozier for the first half of the race, but on lap 11 Drivold put the pedal down and came around Brace from the top of the track. Even with two yellow flag interruptions, Drivold stayed in command. At the finish a move to steal second by Dozier thwarted and the line up was Drivold first, Brace second, Dozier thrid, Aaron Hicks fourth, Bill Cordery fifth and Jerold Christensen.
